As a photographer, the one question I get most often is “What do we need to wear for our session?” The fall season is the busiest time of the year for photo sessions! Families like to document how their kids have grown and changed over the last year and use their photos to send out holiday cards. My clients want to make sure that they’re choosing the right colors and patterns that coordinate so their family looks their best! I love watching the leaves change colors and feeling the coolness in the air as fall begins. There are so many great options when it comes to outfits! With mixing some neutral colors in with some soft and rich colors while avoiding logos and bold patterns, your family will be styling in no time!
When picking out any outfits for a photo session, no matter what season, it always helps to start with choosing mom’s outfit first and then adding in colors from there. As a mom myself, sometimes it can be tricky to find a dress or outfit that fits well, looks good with my body type and is a good color with my skin tone. However, once I can find my outfit, it’s a whole lot easier to pick out outfits for our kids and my husband.
Complement Your Colors
The days of everyone wearing a white or black top with khaki pants and jeans are gone. It’s better to find colors that complement each other such as light blue, gray, and blush or burgundy, ivory, and navy blue. Be sure to avoid neon colors as they cast weird colors on your skin. Sometimes finding colors that coordinate well can be a challenge, so I send my families a style guide for every session to help them choose colors and outfits. This is super helpful so my clients can prep before their session.
Solids vs. Patterns
When choosing your outfits, it’s always best to lean towards solid colors. Small pops of pattern or print are good, but just make sure that they don’t overpower everyone else’s outfits. If your daughter is wearing a pattern, then everyone else can wear solid colors or have dad wear a small pattern on his shirt.
Layers and Textures
After you have chosen what everyone will be wearing, it’s especially a good idea to add in some layers and textures for fall photos. I encourage my clients to wear fabrics such as corduroy, flannel, tweed, and knits. These fabrics add in some soft detail without it being too distracting. Having dad wear a blazer over a button down is always a good outfit choice. For layers, I love jewelry, scarves, and hats! If you choose to wear all solid colors for your photos, then adding in a scarf with a pattern is a great way to complete your outfit.
Some Quick Reminders!
No Baggy Shorts/Pants
Wear comfortable shoes, but make sure they coordinate
Choose colors and soft neutrals versus pure white or black
No low cut tops
Avoid big patterns and logos
Be sure to lay out all of your outfits together at least two weeks ahead of time, so you can make changes if needed.
