A Summer Photoshoot with The Burdette Family

I don’t know if you noticed, but this summer especially in the south has been very rainy! I have had to reschedule several photo sessions because of all the storms. So I was really excited that I got to meet the Burdettes and capture their family photoshoot in Cleveland!

When Justine booked her session with me, it was originally supposed to be in March. March – can you believe it?! That combined with family commitments made it tricky for us to find an agreeable date and one where the weather would finally cooperate. I kid you not – one raindrop hit my windshield on my way to their shoot location, and I shouted out loud, “Not today!” This family is only here for a short amount of time due to being relocated within the Navy, so we had to get their session done!

Justine and her family were excited to move here because of the beautiful mountain scenery. They enjoy hiking to waterfalls and have really taken advantage of all the outdoor activities that Chattanooga has to offer. Including the mountains was something that she was requested for their photos. Unfortunately, due to more rain coming the night of this session, we had to shoot earlier in the day and keep the shoot location closer to Cleveland. However, we had a backup plan in place and we were all pleased on how their photos turned out!

Justine’s kids were a little shy at first, but she assured me that they would warm up. They really like dad jokes, so I did my research beforehand! One way that I prepare for a family photo session is reading the submitted questionnaire from my clients, not once but multiple times. I make sure to memorize names and find out ways to make everyone comfortable. No one spends every day in front of a camera, so it’s my job as a photographer to find out the kids’ interests and activities. I learn their favorite shows, how old they are, and what makes them laugh. In this case, I knew that coming prepared with some funny dad jokes would help them loosen up!
