Some senior sessions seem to click from the very beginning, and Riley’s was one of those. We spent an hour exploring downtown Chattanooga, photographing around the courthouse and eventually making our way to a nearby small park for more pictures. This area is home to a historic stone church tower. These two locations complemented each other perfectly, giving Riley a gallery with a mix of timeless architecture, open green space, and downtown character.
Riley recently graduated from Notre Dame High School and will be starting his freshman year at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga this fall. Between playing pickleball, spending time fishing, enjoying days on the lake, and watching Marvel movies, he’s the kind of senior who balances an active lifestyle with a great sense of humor. Riley describes himself as witty, kind, and smart, and after spending an hour with him, I’d have to agree.
One of my favorite things about Riley’s session was how comfortable he was in front of the camera. Some seniors, especially guys, need a little time to settle in, but Riley embraced the experience from the start. His confidence and easygoing personality made it possible to capture a wide variety of images in just one hour. I always like to play the senior’s favorite music as well to help him feel at ease as I start shooting, and all of my seniors have different requests. From relaxed, candid moments to more polished portraits, every stop gave us something different to work with.
The Hamilton County Courthouse is one of my favorite downtown locations because of its classic architecture. The stone columns, wide staircases, and clean lines create portraits that feel timeless without being overly formal. I also love the trees and colorful planted flowers along the sidewalks. Just a short walk away, Phillips Park offers an entirely different atmosphere. The historic stone church tower adds texture, while the surrounding green space softens the urban feel and creates beautiful variety within a single session. With this location, you also get some buildings in the background that lend extra character.
One of the best parts about photographing seniors downtown is how quickly we can move between unique backdrops. Without driving to multiple locations, we can create a gallery that looks like it was photographed all over the city! Riley’s session is a perfect example of how much variety is possible in a relatively short amount of time.
As Riley prepares for this next chapter at UTC, I’m so glad I was able to capture this exciting season of his life! Senior portraits are about more than celebrating graduation. They’re about preserving who you are right now before everything changes after you leave for college. Riley’s session reflects the confidence, personality, and excitement he brings into this next adventure!
Congratulations, Riley! I can’t wait to see all that you accomplish at UTC!
If you’re looking for senior portraits in Chattanooga that combine beautiful architecture, historic landmarks, and a relaxed, personalized experience, downtown Chattanooga offers incredible possibilities. Whether you love the classic look of the courthouse, the unique charm of Phillips Park, or a combination of both, I’d love to help you create a senior session that feels authentically you.
